Hi Everyone,
Happy Wednesday! I recently got the chance to speak with singer/songwriter, Whitney Lyman. I asked her a few questions and learned more about her and her music career. Lyman is super talented and I can’t wait to share my story with my followers!
Q 1: When did you first get started in music and how old were you? Whitney’s Answer: I was three years old when I first started singing and I was six years old when I wrote my first song. I grew up in a very musical family in Idaho and we moved around a lot, trading between parents every year. During the long car rides I would start singing to myself and making up songs. I kept participating in everything to do with music that I could such as school choirs, symphonic band, marching band, singing competitions, musicals, any chance to learn music and perform. Then I decided to go to college to study music full time at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, where I studied vocal jazz and music composition. I then integrated into the illustrious music scene of the city by playing in a lot of different bands and also established my solo career there.
Q 2: Where does your inspiration start or come from? Whitney’s Answer: My inspiration always stems from a feeling, and how I can put that into words and music, to make it sound like the feeling.
Q 3: What type of genre would you describe yourself to be? And style of music? Whitney’s Answer: I’d say my music is Indie Pop & Rock. But I have so many influences it’s hard to nail it down to one style.
Q 4: Where can we listen to your music and what is next for you that is in the works? Whitney’s Answer: My music is on all streaming services that you usually find your music on; Apple, Spotify, Tidal, Bandcamp, etc. But what I’m working on next is a special pre-release of my new EP, Love Spell, exclusively on a brand new music platform that is being launched very soon and it will change the way we own our digital albums and goods. Announcement coming soon!
Q 5: Do you collaborate with any other musicians? Whitney’s Answer: Yes of course! I have collaborated on a lot of electronic music like singing with Odesza on their “A Moment Apart” album release live on KEXP and on Jimmie Kimmel Live! and their Reprise Deluxe Edition of that same album. I performed with Big Wild and I released an electronic EP with Seattle producer Zoolab. I have also performed and arranged a lot for Seattle Rock Orchestra putting on tribute concerts to major artists I love such as the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, and more. More on the orchestral side, Andrew Joslyn, the extremely accomplished violinist and composer, has been a big collaborator of mine since we enjoy performing on each others’ projects for close to 10 years now. And of course I spent time in the polyrhythmic choral-pop band, Pollens, and a folk band before that. Lately I have been collaborating with other songwriters to write great songs together such as Alan Roy Scott, Cherish Alexander, and I even have a new song I’m working on written by Toto’s Steve Porcaro.
